Siberian Fir has a refreshing, woody scent and is known for its calming and relaxing aroma. In addition, the fir is full of therapeutic properties that can improve your health and well-being. This is due to its unique chemical composition, with bornyl acetate being the most beneficial. Siberian Fir is an undeservedly little known oil that definitely deserves a place in your oil collection due to its versatility: it supports the nervous system, has a positive effect on tissue, has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system, and supports healthy respiratory function.
The Siberian Fir is native to the cold, boreal lands of Siberia, Mongolia and northern China. There, the fir is exposed to temperatures as low as -50°C. In addition, it is extremely shade-tolerant, frost-resistant and hardy, making it one of the toughest and most well-known trees in the world. Thanks to dōTERRA's careful extraction method, we have the opportunity to benefit from these powerful properties in our everyday lives.
In this comprehensive guide, we'll show you some of our favorite ways to incorporate Siberian Fir essential oil into your daily routine. We'll explore its rich history, delve into the science behind its benefits, and provide practical DIY tips and recipes to help you get the most out of this incredible oil. Whether you are an experienced essential oil enthusiast or a curious beginner, there is something here for everyone. Let's dive into the secrets of Siberian Fir essential oil.
Before we get into the details, it's important to note that if you're reading this article in July 2024, Siberian Fir is being offered at a 10% discount this month. So it's a great time to stock up and discover its many benefits.
A brief history of Siberian Fir
Siberian Fir, scientifically known as Abies sibirica, has a rich history and strong cultural significance in many parts of the world. The oil is obtained by steam distillation from the needles and branches of the Siberian Fir, which is native to Siberia and other parts of Russia. Historically, the tree has been valued for centuries for its healing properties in relation to respiratory diseases, fever, muscle and rheumatic pain.
Symbolically, the fir forms a canopy that protects the earth and channels the energies of the universe. In the wild, animals seek shelter under the Siberian Fir at night to protect themselves and enjoy the rest that the trees provide.

The extraction process
Siberian Fir oil is extracted by a process called steam distillation. It takes a full 1.7 kg of the evergreen needles to produce one bottle (15 ml) of Siberian Fir Oil.
Fun fact: To minimize the impact on the environment, dōTERRA Siberian Fir Oil is distilled from the needles of trees that have already been harvested by the timber industry.

A sustainable choice
Until a few years ago, dōTERRA had White Fir oil in its standard product line. Due to high demand and dōTERRA's commitment to sustainable and consistent quality, dōTERRA has decided to replace White Fir with Siberian Fir. DōTERRA is committed to consistent quality, which may mean that certain oils may be out of stock for an extended period of time or replaced by others. We are proud to work with a company that is committed to long-term sustainability and product quality.
Watch Dr. Hill's video about this change at the 2017 Global Convention.
But now back to the question: white or Siberian fir. First of all, it should be said that the two are very similar. Only the scent of Siberian Fir is less citrusy. But the oil has even better properties than the White Fir has to offer.
A much stronger chemistry
Let's compare the chemistry of these two oils.

As you can see in this graph, these two oils have a similar chemical composition. The major components of the two oils are largely similar. However, Siberian Fir has a higher concentration of many ingredients, such as bornyl acetate. This supports healthy immune function in the body, is very relaxing and has an extremely calming effect.
The only ingredient that is not present in a higher concentration is limonene. But we'd wager that most of you don't use Siberian Fir for its limonene content - if you want that, use a citrus oil like lemon.
So you can imagine that Siberian Fir is a more concentrated version of White Fir! A fantastic alternative, we think! Also, Siberian Fir can be taken internally, which is not possible with White fir.
There are a total of 139 published studies on the benefits of bornyl acetate, the main chemical component of Siberian fir essential oil (as of Dec. 2017).
Here is a useful tool by Dr. Hill to categorize oils according to their chemical composition.

Siberian Fir is an oil for anyone struggling with a major transition: a big move, the loss of a loved one, or a new job.
This oil can help you cultivate feelings of forgiveness, wisdom, optimism and comfort.
Siberian Fir oil helps you leave the past behind. Often belief patterns cause us to get stuck and not move forward. Siberian Fir encourages us to see new horizons in such situations by giving us a new perspective on things. Especially when it comes to overcoming past injuries, traumas, or other negative experiences, Siberian Fir supports this process. The oil makes difficult transitions easier by giving you perspective and teaching you to understand the meaning and significance of new situations. The oil helps you focus on the good and reminds you that you are inherently valuable and needed.
Everyone has the right to experience things in their lives, whether they are positive or negative. Siberian Fir encourages you to evaluate your own life choices with honesty and tolerance. It makes you realize that without the resistance in your life, you would not have had the strength and wisdom to get where you are today. The Siberian Fir also reminds you that forgiveness is essential to your own evolution. It helps you to let go of the past and to let go of it completely.
The Siberian Fir is native to the cold boreal regions of Siberia, where it is exposed to temperatures as low as -50°C. Most of the time it is covered with snow, which represents purity and balance. When it melts in the spring, new life is born. For this reason, Siberian Fir oil can also be used as a cleansing oil, removing those things that no longer serve you. This is why the oil represents new perspectives and helps you to live in the here and now.

Purity and sustainability
When using essential oils, make sure you are using a pure oil. A label that says "100 % pure" does not necessarily mean that it is the best or safest essential oil. Unfortunately the EMA as well as the FDA does not do a good job of regulating the market, so we as consumers need to be responsible shoppers.
We choose dōTERRA because we believe they have the highest standard of purity on the market - the Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade standard. They also source oils from sustainable and responsible production. doTERRA sources their oils through Co-Impact Sourcing, which means cutting out the middleman, creating long-term, mutually beneficial contracts, and ensuring that farmers receive fair wages.
We want to buy from responsible companies - not just those trying to make a quick buck.
