It's finally here - summer. This year, the weather has been really crazy, providing us with mild temperatures and lots of rain until June. Fortunately, this has now changed somewhat and the sun is shining more often again.
The right time to officially launch dōTERRA's sun care range this year. dōTERRA has invested a whole four or five years of research and development into the sun protection range in order to develop a mineral-based sun care line. But that's not all! In addition to effective & immediate sun protection, the sun care line moisturizes, regenerates the skin, leaves no white haze, is suitable for all skin types, protects the coral reefs and is free of chemical ingredients.
In this article, we will introduce the five products in this new sun care line, highlight the differences between mineral and chemical sun protection and explain why YOU need these products in your household.
Sunny weather not only has a positive effect on our psyche, but also has many health benefits for our body. This is because the sun's rays stimulate vitamin D production in our bodies. It is therefore essential that we regularly spend short periods of time in the sun. However, it is essential to use sun protection for longer periods of time, as the sun's UV rays can lead to burns and unpleasant consequences.

Choose your sun protection wisely!
Although sunshine is extremely important for our well-being, protection from UV rays is very important. This can prevent burns, premature ageing of the skin and other consequences. Especially if you spend a lot of time in the sun in summer, you should protect your skin. This can prevent signs of premature skin ageing such as age spots, wrinkles or sagging skin.
Chemical vs. mineral sun protection
Do you actually know the difference between a mineral and chemical sunscreen? Although both aim to protect the skin, they differ greatly in terms of technology and ingredients.
Chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin. They are specifically designed to absorb the UV rays and then inactivate them through a chemical reaction before they penetrate the skin and create a feeling of gentle warmth. To deactivate the rays, active ingredients such as oxybenzone, octinoxate or other chemical agents are often used. However, these chemicals have the disadvantage that they can damage the reefs in the oceans.
In addition, chemical sunscreens need to be absorbed for at least 20 minutes to develop their full protective effect. As some chemical filters break down over time due to exposure to UV rays and form free radicals, they can be problematic. This is because the radicals enter our bloodstream via our skin and can be detected in it long after sunbathing.
Certain active ingredients found in conventional sunscreens can also have a hormone-disrupting effect and cause skin allergies and other problems.
This is not the case with mineral sunscreens. These reflect the UV rays. Unlike the sunscreen filter described above, mineral sunscreens do not break down under the influence of UV rays, but form a physical barrier on the skin. This results in effective broad-spectrum protection that is immediately effective. It does not require any application time, which is very helpful if you are already out and about or spend a lot of time on or in the water.
The best known and at the same time most important mineral sun protection filters include titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which are generally recognized as safe for all skin types. Another plus point in favor of mineral sunscreens is the fact that they are reef safe. This means that, unlike chemical products, they do not leave any toxins in the water.
Natural sun protection from DōTERRA
Three main objectives
The DōTERRA Sun line comprises a range of natural products that will accompany you throughout the summer.
During development, they focused on three main objectives:
A product series for all skin types. Thanks to a nourishing, moisturizing formula rich in antioxidants, the products are suitable for all skin types. They also leave minimal residue, making them easy to use.
A product series that is environmentally conscious. All products are reef safe, cruelty free and made with a vegan formula. What does "reef safe" mean?
Terms such as "reef safe" or "reef friendly" mean that the sunscreen is free from oxybenzone and octinoxate.
Studies have shown that these UV-blocking chemicals can lead to coral bleaching, and when corals bleach they are still alive but under severe stress, making them susceptible to disease and death.
For this reason, dōTERRA has set itself the goal of developing a sunscreen without chemical ingredients for humans and the environment.
A product range that is free from harmful ingredients. DōTERRA Sun is free from synthetic ingredients - including oxybenzone, parabens, phthalates and other chemical ingredients. The products contain non-nano zinc oxide to ensure comprehensive mineral sun protection.
DōTERRA's sun care line - A system for the whole body
DōTERRA has thought of everything when developing this sun care line. The sunscreen is available in three different forms: as a lotion with a practical flip cap, as a stick with a thick tube that can be twisted open and as a spray in an aerosol-free aluminum spray bottle. All three formulations have a sun protection factor of 30, are waterproof for up to 80 minutes and offer broad-spectrum protection, i.e. they block both UVB and UVA rays. To round off the sun care line, doTERRA has also developed an After Sun Soothing Body Spray.
Since May 2024, there has been another member of the sun care line - a light, moisturizing face cream designed for daily use.
Brilliant ingredients for your well-being
Your sun care should offer you two main benefits: Protection and regeneration. The dōTERRA Sun products are made from excellent ingredients to achieve these benefits. Your protection comes from non-nano zinc oxide, the active ingredient in our sun protection products. Zinc oxide is one of the most commonly used mineral sunscreens. It is safe, water resistant and non-irritating.
You may be wondering, what does "non-nano" mean? Why is that important? Zinc oxide can be produced in different particle sizes, which fall into two categories: nano and non-nano. Nano particles are small enough to potentially be absorbed into the bloodstream. Non-nano particles are larger, which means they cannot be absorbed in the same way.
Now let's move on to regeneration. The sun can be tough. That's why it's important to give your skin extra support to keep it glowing and healthy during and after your time outdoors. You can regenerate your skin by nourishing and soothing it. Several ingredients in the dōTERRA Sun product line provide the skin with important nutrients.

Bisabolol - can reduce redness and irritation and soothe the skin. It is included in all sun protection products as a preventative measure.

Aloe vera - has soothing properties and is the basis of the after sun spray.
Arnica montana flower - is a natural anti-inflammatory ingredient that is particularly important when the skin is stressed and tired.

Vitamin E - is extremely nourishing and is contained in every doTERRA Sun product.
Raspberry seed oil, avocado oil and jojoba ester - are nourishing ingredients contained in the lotion and spray.
Shea butter and cocoa butter - nourishing ingredients in the stick formula.
Aloe vera, red algae extract and hyaluronic acid - nourishing ingredients in the after sun spray. Hyaluronic acid is particularly nourishing due to its moisturizing effect.
The After Sun Spray contains a patented blend of essential oils of copaiba, lavender, lemongrass, peppermint, Japanese peppermint, helichrysum, sandalwood, blue tansy, frankincense and coriander.

The lotion offers mineral protection thanks to non-nano zinc oxide and nourishes the skin with ingredients such as vitamin E, aloe vera, bisabolol, raspberry seed oil, avocado oil, turmeric extract and jojoba ester. It is also infused with essential oils of red mandarin, lemongrass, ylang ylang, frankincense, helichrysum and carrot seed.
Apply a generous amount of the lotion to all uncovered areas of the face and body and rub it in until it is no longer visible. Although the mineral sunscreen is effective immediately, it is advisable to wait 15 minutes for the sunscreen to dry and then start your activity - especially if it is on or in water. Remember to reapply the lotion every two hours for optimal effect.
The lotion has been deliberately formulated to be gentle enough to use on the face.
Another plus that convinced us: The cream doesn't leave a white haze like many other products we've used over the years.

Key ingredients in the spray include vitamin E, aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, red algae extract and arnica flower extract. It is also infused with copaiba, lavender, peppermint, helichrysum, blue tansy and frankincense essential oils to regenerate the skin. Spray it on the affected area after a long day in the sun or generally stressed skin and pamper your skin with moisture.
Tipps for staying safe in the sun
Having said all this, we recommend that you use natural sun protection in future so that you can take another step towards using fewer chemicals in your everyday life. Of course, you should still spend most of your time in the shade. Especially at midday, when the UV rays are at their strongest. Airy clothing, a hat and plenty of water will also help you and prevent headaches and overheating.
Again, it's a question of balance - the sun is incredibly important, if only for vitamin D production and the psyche. However, too much of it can also be harmful.
The dōTERRA Sun products can be used all year round, but we especially recommend having them to hand for all summer adventures. You can buy all the products as a set or individually. We recommend buying the set so you can try the different formulas and decide which one you like best, but I would buy at least one version of the sunscreen and the after sun spray. If you have children, I recommend trying the spray or stick formulas which are quicker to apply. Enjoy the sun, but protect your skin.
Our conclusion
We were able to test dōTERRA's sun protection last year during our sunny vacation in Italy and were thrilled. We have finally found a product that feels good on our skin, doesn't leave white marks and still protects us effectively from the sun. And if we have overdone it with sightseeing in the sun and sunbathing, the after sun spray has served us well and brought rapid relief. The new face cream, which has been available on the market since May 2024, will also become an integral part of our routine in future.
